The Columbus Centre School of Music continued to show steady student enrollment for their music lesson including 10 multiinstrumental students - the highest number to date .
The talent and hard work of both students and their instructors produced impressive results : many students completed their Royal Conservatory of Music examinations and participated in music festivals , two of them earning first place ! In addition , one of the program ’ s most accomplished piano students , Tara Seeber , earned the Conservatory ’ s Grade 8 certification . Two new instructors joined the team after drum / guitar instructor Stefan Bildy left to pursue an opportunity to work with the JUNO and Billboard Music Awards-winning group Barenaked Ladies .
Adult art classes led by artist and instructor Sam Paonessa remained as popular as ever in 2017 .
Almost 90 % of program registrants are returning students , reflecting Paonessa ’ s skills as an instructor and the sense of community and social interaction fostered in his classes .
The school hosted its first-ever “ Bring a Buddy Week ” where students could invite a friend to join a class .
Enrollment in the Cultural Arts department ’ s music and art programs remained strong in 2017 and the students continued to excel .
The music students showcased their talent to family and friends at four recitals during the year . Scholarships worth a combined $ 4,000 were awarded to students who showed exceptional talent and dedication to their musical growth . For the first time ever , the music program and DanzArts Toronto ’ s competitive team collaborated to perform a grand finale piece at the annual Christmas music recital . Their performance of Leonard Cohen ’ s Hallelujah was a great success , and will be repeated in future years .
