CONCEPT : Discover a safe , fun and nontoxic approach to the art of intaglio . This exciting workshop teaches a variety of intaglio techniques while students create several unique plates . We then focus on printing in black and white and in color . We cover a multitude of intaglio processes such as line etching , soft ground , spit bite and lift techniques . Color applications include monoprint with etching , a la poupée , relief roll and stencil printing . Students are introduced to a vast spectrum of techniques , and are able to pick and choose the processes that best suit their ideas and objectives .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : Using nontoxic techniques and materials , students learn copperplate intaglio in black and white and color . We generate multiple plates and explore nontoxic approaches .
ACTIVITIES : Daily activities include hands-on demonstrations , open studio time with instructor support , informal group discussions , and personal instruction . Large blocks of creative time are allotted for individual work . The group engages in problem solving with techniques and encouraging discussion .
FACULTY : Michael Krueger works in a variety of media including painting , drawing , printmaking , animation and ceramics . Recent solo exhibitions have taken place at galleries such as Sunday L . CONCEPT : Leap from traditional to contemporary in this exploratory workshop that examines the possibilities of Japanese-style water-based woodblock printing . Mokuhanga is a nontoxic process and does not require a press to print . Visually , it has potential for creating both precise and exact marks as well as expressive and painterly impressions . We cover basic techniques such as those used in making traditional Ukiyo-e prints as well as explore other approaches including using a laser cutter . Examinations and discussions about cultural references and ideas relevant to Japanese woodblock printing are also an important component of this workshop . Students go home at the end of the week with a collection of handmade prints .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : Participants create multicolor prints using traditional Japanese carving and printing techniques , including using a Hangi-to ( carving knife ), hand printing using a baren , and using a traditional kento registration method . Use of the laser cutter is introduced as an alternative to hand carving .
ACTIVITIES : We begin with a demonstration of the entire process from carving to printing . Individual aspects of the process and materials are discussed , such as tools , papers , paper sizing , tool sharpening methods , pigments and more . Conversations and discussions occur throughout the week , and there is ample studio time .
FACULTY : Yoonmi Nam received her M . F . A . from the Rhode Island School of Design . Her work considers crosscultural experience and a sense of transience through prints , installations and drawings . She is Associate Professor of Art at the University of Kansas .

CONCEPT : Delve into the world of printmaking in this introductory workshop , which invites artists and printmakers of all levels to explore Western and Eastern approaches to carving woodblocks . Students learn how to achieve complex colors in a woodblock image with perfect registration through reduction and multiple block printing . At its most basic , relief printing is inking the high areas of a matrix and pressing firmly against paper , creating an image . However , through the investigation of color opacity , transparency , layering , texture and form , this seemingly simple technique can be made intriguing and complex .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : Students learn traditional and experimental carving sequences and kento registration methods to create multiple and reductive layers . We use woodblocks as the matrices for this course and we print with oil-based inks .
ACTIVITIES : Technical information is provided through hands-on demonstrations followed by time for you to work in the studio . Informal group feedback is facilitated and individual instruction is provided . We spend the beginning of the week focusing on developing skills through specific projects , and then shift to personal projects later in the week .
FACULTY : Katie Baldwin produces artist books and prints under Queen Anne ’ s Revenge Press . In 2004 , she was one of seven artists selected to learn traditional Japanese woodblock printing ( Mokuhanga ) at the Nagasawa residency on Awaji Island , Japan . She is an Assistant Professor at the University of Alabama , Huntsville .
