Representing Color & Light in Painting

SKILL LEVEL : I - II
CONCEPT : Master two of the most difficult elements of painting — color and light . By breaking down color into its building blocks of hue , value and saturation , we simplify these complex and sometimes daunting aspects of representational painting . Students learn to identify and gauge these fundamental elements , allowing us to achieve a convincing sense of form and space . Working from observation , still life , a model and the landscape , we focus on color mixing strategies , conceptualizing our visual experience , and effectively handling paint and brushwork .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : Working from observation in oil paint , students experiment with both direct and indirect painting techniques such as alla-prima painting , glazing , scumbling and under-painting . We place particular focus on color mixing , applying paint and painting quickly while working from life .
ACTIVITIES : We make one or more paintings per day , focusing on different aspects of observational painting such as tone and color . Every project is introduced with a demonstration , and working time involves continuous individual hands-on instruction .
FACULTY : Doron Langberg holds an M . F . A . from Yale University . His work has been exhibited in galleries and museums in the U . S ., and featured in New American Paintings , The Brooklyn Rail and The Huffington Post . Doron recently attended Yaddo art residency and was named an NYFA Painting Finalist .

Works on Paper : collage & gouache

SKILL LEVEL : Open to All
CONCEPT : Put your imagination to the test in this expressive workshop for painters and printmakers alike in which we create new works using gouache and collage . Gouache is a magnificent , water-based paint used for creating rich , opaque and velvety surfaces . Students creatively merge gouache and collage to generate dynamic and many-layered works on paper . Pochoir , a hand-stenciling process , is introduced as a way to build collage-like surfaces using gouache in an additive method .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : Students use archival collage techniques , acrylic gouache and pochoir to create unique , layered , expressive works of art . Experimentation is encouraged with an emphasis on composition , color , pattern and the use of collage as a design element .
ACTIVITIES : The first day will offer an overview of materials and techniques along with a demonstration of archival collage technique and how to map out a painting . Students will start a piece . On day two , a demonstration of pochoir will lead students to the concentration of individual work . Students will receive both individual instruction and participate in group discussions and critiques .
FACULTY : Lucy Fradkin ’ s numerous prestigious awards include grants from Pollock-Krasner , the Gottlieb Foundation , the Sharpe Foundation and two NYFA Fellowships . She has exhibited at the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery , the American Academy in Rome and many other national and international venues . She teaches at the Art Students League in New York .

Photographic Collage : an exploration of photography & painting

CONCEPT : Join us for an engaging exploration of the artistic synthesis between two distinct art forms : photography and painting . Discover transfer techniques that integrate photographic images and text directly onto painted surfaces , resulting in intriguingly complex works . Using traditional collage and photomontage , master new methods that allow for opaque and translucent layers . Reductive methods such as sanding and scraping reveal the history of earlier photographic layers and suggest an archaeological approach to image development . The workshop emphasizes experimentation and exploratory approaches . Participants produce a portfolio of physical examples of all techniques that act as a tangible reference , or technical toolbox , for future application .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : Students learn photographic and digital techniques to produce custom translucent collage layers . These layers are then incorporated into traditional acrylic paintings on gessoed panels and watercolor board . Utilize traditional collage with photographic material ( text and image ). Explore digital manipulation of imagery including direct printing onto Japanese papers and custom built acrylic skins . Reductive approaches in sanding and scraping reveal richly layered surfaces .
ACTIVITIES : We begin each morning with a technical demonstration illustrated with visual examples from contemporary art . A range of integrated photographic painting approaches on paper and gessoed panels are introduced . The workshop begins with traditional direct collage approaches . Our investigations transition to digital approaches and students scan their paintings to combine with manipulated digital imagery .
FACULTY : Kate Leonard is a Professor of Art at Colorado College where she directs the Graphics Research Lab , an innovative program in printmaking . Her work is exhibited nationally and internationally .
