Science Teachers’ Association of New South Wales Inc. Providing leadership and promoting excellence in science education STANSW HSC Science Exam Preparation Days for Yr12 Students Cherine Spirou and Margaret Shepherd Friday 18 August – University of Sydney A huge thank you to Sydney University for their sponsorship of this event. Students attended sessions from specialist teachers from across 4 of the 5 main Stage 6 science subjects – Chemistry, Physics, Biology and Senior Science. Each presenter spent a significant amount of time preparing a full day of student workshops. STANSW thanks them for their generosity and professionalism. The event was advertised as a two day event, with repeat sessions on the second day, however the Thursday program was cancelled as there were far too few registrants to go ahead with a full program. 93 students and 7 teachers attended the Friday program. Biology – 38 Students and 2 teachers Chemistry – 32 students and 1 teacher Earth and Environmental – 3 students (session cancelled) Physics – 13 students and 1 teacher The presenters were: Chemistry – Maree Woods, Aquinas College Physics – Jeff De Rooy, Sydney technology HS Biology – Margaret Shepherd, Sydney Catholic Schools Senior Science – William Matchett, DoE NSW EES - Diana Entwistle, Mt St Joseph Milperra. Thank you to the schools that attended on the day: o o o o o o o Blacktown Girls High School East Hill Boys High School Mount St Joseph Milperra Ngaruki GulGul Central School Redeemer Baptist School St Aloysius College The Forest High School Each subject workshop covered extended responses, mandatory investigations and how to answer questions and what constitutes Band 3 or Band 6 answers. HSC Study Lab generously sponsored catering on the day, for teachers and students. Thanks to USYD venue hosts, and Charlotte Fletcher from USYD Outreach for their support of this STANSW event. Thank you to Visnja Aw, Anne Muggleton and Shay Deen for their support both on the day and also with organising the registration and the administration for this event. 10
