RAMM Fence
Electric Fence 101
The Fence ~ There are many different
along the fence, such as weeds. A good
rule of thumb is 1 Joule for a 5 acre
pasture. The output of the charger
should be selected to provide between
4000-5000 volts through the fence at
the point furthest from the charger. This
“bite” felt by the horse is short lived and
not enough to cause physical harm.
types of electric fence available on the
market today. Shockline, our coated
high tensile wire, is durable and visible.
Pro-Tek, by RAMM, also offers three
more economical choices. A very visible
1.5" electric tape, a 1/3" braided electric
and an electric rope. Electrobraid® is
another popular option. For temporary
installations we offer an electric twine.
We do not carry uncoated wire because
we feel it is unsafe for horses.
We are often asked, “how many rails or
strands of fence should I use?” While
this is a matter of opinion, 65% of our
customers utilize three strands, often
in combination with a FLEX FENCE®
top rail. Along busy roads, areas with a
large number of horses concentrated, or
stallion paddocks at least 4 strands are
recommended. Keep the bottom strand
14"-18" off the ground to prevent grass
from shorting out the fence.
Cut-Off Switch ~ Acts to interrupt
the flow of electricity from the charger to
the fence. It can be installed between the
charger and the fence to provide an easy
way of disconnecting the power without
having to return to the barn (generally
where the charger is located).
Charger ~
Also called an energizer, this
provides an electric pulse which streams
through the fence about once per second.
The effectiveness of a charger is based on
many different things: soil moisture, size of
ground field, type and amount of fence. The
most important measure of output is the Joule
rating. More Joules does not equate to a higher
shock if the horse touches the fence, rather a
more steady flow should there be resistance
Ground System ~ Moisture is the
conductor of electricity in the ground
field and is critical for completing the
circuit. T his is the key to a good electric
fence and often the most common source
of failure. Consider that the grounding
system is similar to a television antenna;
the larger the antenna, the greater the
reception will be.
