Peace and Freedom

Finalist: Kennedy Holt

Harrisburg High School

I was already sentenced, before coming out of the womb. Freedom.

Freedom comes, freedom comes, hold on it won’t be long…peace.

The new Jim Crow, the stop, search, and arrest of our souls.

The police playing philosopher’s, trying to control us. Oh, freedom.

It’s time we all come to God, and make, well allow him to be our pacifier. Peace.

Black lives being taken away, just like cigarettes being thrown away, freedom.

We always ask ourselves “who’s wrong, who’s right? Who’s Black, who’s White?” C’mon. peace.

A wise, honorable man, once said

“…when we allow freedom to ring-when we let it ring from every city and every hamlet, from every state to every city, we will be able to speed up that day when all of God’s children, Black men, White men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing the words of the old Negro spiritual. Free at last, free at last, great God a-mighty we are free at last.”-1963, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Free us so that we all can have peace;

free us so that we all can rejoice

in freedom together.

Freedom and peace, some hell of a right,

funny many feel the need to fight…

Freedom and peace, oh God, our father,

please grant it!

Peace.
