AWARDS RECOGNITION OS had much to celebrate in 2016-2017! Our OS community made a difference on many fronts, and in many cases we were recognized for our efforts. Professor Elizabeth Armstrong received a Faculty Recognition Award, which recognizes a mid-career faculty member who has demonstrated remarkable contributions to the University through outstanding achievements in scholarly research and/or creative endeavors; excellence as a teacher, advisor and men- tor; and distinguished participation in the service activities of the University and elsewhere. Elizabeth Armstrong Ian Bunting (OS degree expected December ‘17) was named to the Academic All-Big Ten Team. Assistant Professor Michael Heaney received the Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP) Outstanding Research Mentor Award and was nominated for the Golden Apple Award. Assistant Professor Jeremy Levine was also nominated for the Golden Apple Award. Michael Heaney Zach Miller (OS ‘17), one of this year’s peer mentors, received the OS Spirit Award. The award is given to someone dedicated to the area of student services and the development of a close-knit OS community. OS Director Mark Mizruchi received the Charles Horton Cooley Award for Distinguished Scholarship in Sociology, awarded by the Michigan Sociological Association in October 2016. Jeremy Levine Kate Ruehrdanz (OS degree expected August ‘17) received the Andy Lansing Award for her demonstrated academic excellence in the classroom and leader- ship qualities in the OS program. Florence Rivkin (OS ‘17) received the OS Jordan Harris Social Justice Award for her commitment to social justice through volunteer work, academic commit- ment, and political engagement. Assistant Professor Sara Soderstrom received the 2016 LSA Individual Award for Outstanding Contributions to Undergraduate Education.
