SHORE LUNCH IN SUNSET COUNTRY
SOME OF THE MOST IMPORTANT THINGS TO CONSIDER:
• Make sure that there are no bones in the fish!
• Make sure the oil is the right temperature. You can usually do
a drop test and you should get some nice bubbles when the
oil is hot enough.
• While it’s nice to pull a boat up on a beach, don’t cook on the
beach because sand will get into everything!
When it comes to recipes for batter it’s almost hard to go wrong.
I like to keep it simple with my favourite batter combination.

Shore lunch is an essential part of a trip for many anglers who visit
Northwest Ontario each year. I started guiding at Ash Rapids Camp
on Lake of the Woods when I was 14 years old and while I had the fish-
ing part figured out the first order of business for me before I took any
guests out on my own was to tag along with some of the other guides
to learn how to prepare and cook a shore lunch.
Over the years I have probably cooked over 500 shore lunches and
I don’t think that I have ever left without over-eating! People love to
eat fresh fish and it’s a nice way to break up a long day of fishing.
- Dip the fish in flour
- Coat with egg
- Cover in corn flake crumbs
- After the fish are cooked, sprinkle a little bit of lemon pepper
over the fish and they are delicious.
• Other items to include in a good shore lunch are potatoes,
canned beans and corn, some fresh vegetables and bread.
• It pays to make a list before you head out in the morning be
