DOGWALK | CATWALK INTRODUCING YOUR PET

TIPS FOR YOUR INTRODUCING YOUR PET TO A PET DOOR
A few tips and tricks for after you install a wood or glass fitting door
Most cats and dogs are able to be trained to use a pet door with not too much fuss - some may even use the door as though it has always been there and not need full on training !
Some cats and dogs however , due to varying temperaments , may take a little longer to get used to the idea and will require your time and patience .
When beginning training , make sure you avoid frightening your pet or forcing your pet to use the door . Always be patient with your pet and you will find they will accept the doors as a normal means of entry in their own time .
Pets generally learn best when using a reward based training schedule . Have treats handy while you are learning to make it a positive experience for you and your pet ( See the ZeeZ Treats suggested below )!
Never punish your pet and do not give up because they have not quite adjusted to their new method of entry . It can take some pets up to three weeks to train .
• Try training at meal times and place your pets food inside the door where they can see it .
• If your pet is timid , try taping the flap open until they get used to the door .
• Make sure your pet door is not placed too high for your pet to ensure ease of access . The bottom of the door is best placed 100mm to 150mm from the floor .
• Make sure there are no locks applied during the training process as this could cause your pet to take a step back in their learning .
• Always have treats handy to reward use of the door .
