Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance
by David M. Brown
Concurrent Ferrari concours highlight the
68th Annual Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance®,
which honors the 70th Anniversary of Ferrari,
Sunday, August 20, at The Lodge at Pebble Beach™.
In addition, American Dream Cars of the 1960s
will celebrate one-off vehicles that appeared in the
era’s films and television, including Gene Winfield’s
superstar, The Reactor.
Four classes of Ferraris will compete on the
18th fairway of Pebble Beach Golf Links, together
with 30 other classes for cars and motorcycles.
Isotta Fraschini and Castagna Coachwork will
also be featured. Simultaneously, Ferraris will line
the first fairway of the world-famous course, where
Ferrari North America will host the Ferrari 70th
Anniversary Concours.
The first Ferrari-badged automobile was a
125 Sport with a 1.5-liter V-12 engine, which ap-
peared in spring 1947; a 166 MM Touring Bar-
chetta (chassis 0002M) was the first in the United
States, coming to California in September 1948,
two years before the first Pebble Beach Concours
d’Elegance.
The relationship of the great new marque with
a great new event was immediate. “Our history
together is almost as old as Ferrari itself,” says
Concours Chairman Sandra Button, “and we are
proud that we continue to make history together.”
In the second Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance,
in 1951, a 166 MM (chassis 0010M) driven by
James Kimberly, appeared. The next year, a Ferrari
212 Export Touring Barchetta (chassis 0078E),
guided by Arnold Stubbs, placed second in the
Pebble Beach Cup Race.
In 1974, the Concours first awarded for best
Ferrari. In fact, the first postwar car to win the
36
Highline Autos
show’s top award since the late 1960s was Jon
Shirley’s 1954 Ferrari 375 MM Scaglietti Coupe
(chassis 0402 AM) in 2014.
The other nine American Dream cars are
the 1963 Mantaray by Dean Jeffries; 1967 Gyro-X,
Alex Tremulis; 1969 Farago CF 428 Coupe, Paul
Farago; 1960 DiDia 150 built for Bobby Darin;
1965 Pontiac Vivant Roadster, Herb Adams; 1966
Bosley Mark II Interstate Coupe; 1965 Bugatti
T101C Roadster, Virgil Exner/Carrozzeria Ghia;
1963 Tex Smith XR6 Custom Roadster; and a
1962 Studebaker Sceptre Concept Coupe, Brooks
Stevens.
The Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance®
raises more than $1 million annually for charities.
To date, donations total $23-plus million.
Other motoring events associated with the
Concours include the Pebble Beach Motoring Classic,
a 1,500-mile trip from Kirkland, Washington, to
the Lodge at Pebble Beach, August 7−16.
The Pebble Beach Tour d’Elegance presented
by Rolex, August 17, is a 17-mile area drive, in-
cluding a lap around historic Mazda Raceway
Laguna Seca.
In addition, the Rolex Monterey Motorsports
Reunion, August 17−20, at Mazda Raceway Laguna
Seca, showcases 550 pre- and postwar race and
sports cars.
And, the 13th Pebble Beach RetroAuto, at The
Inn at Spanish Bay in Pebble Beach, is August
17–19, 9:30 a.m.–5:30 p.m., featuring a curated
collection of collectibles, automobilia, luxury goods
and technological tools.
