Branch Bridge which once again made possible the connection of West Winds and Pinehurst villages. This pedestrian bridge was owned by Frederick County and was once a vehicular bridge on Harmony Road in the western part of the county. This“ historical” bridge was given to the Lake Linganore community by the county. After funding was secured by LLA to reconstruct the bridge, it was cleaned, repainted, set in place, and opened for use in spring 2004. Other structures added to the trail system were pedestrian bridges built by Scouts, community groups and volunteers, and several benches.
In summer 2012 there was another revision of the trail map. The size and format of the map changed. It was in a“ pocket guide” size and it included addition trails and some trail relocations. The map area was expanded. Locations of some community amenities such as the Indian Caves, pools, tennis courts, and the LLA office were added, as well as a brief listing of some of the various amenities available in the community.
At this time the Trailblazers Committee slowly scaled back the scope of trail maintenance they performed to include only light physical activities such as pruning removing small branches and limbs, blazing trail re-routes if necessary, and monitoring / reporting deteriorating trail conditions and needed repairs and major conditions causing trail blockages to LLA Maintenance staff. Either the staff or contractors would address these larger issues. Trailblazers would also focus most of their efforts on trails in the steeper, wooded, less developed areas of Lake Linganore.
Since 2012 the Trailblazers Committee Chairs have continued to communicate and meet with staff, the developer, village chairs, and some residents to discuss various trail issues and to walk areas slated for further trail projects and locations.
More structures( several Eagle Scout bridges projects, a developerfunded hillside stairway, and a Girl Scout Gold Award bench project), trail additions and repairs( Eagle and other Scout projects and villageled projects), and an Eagle project interpretative nature trail have been created. Other new trail sections and connector trails have been built by the committee, staff or contractors. Bridges have been either added or improved. Trails on both sides of Lake Linganore have been temporarily closed by the new Boyers Mill Road Bridge construction. These trails have been re-constructed and enhanced in the area around the bridge and are expected to be reopened soon.
Over the past five or six years the Lake Linganore community has continued to grow. Areas of some existing villages are being further developed. As when there is new construction in existing areas there are, and will continue to be, changes to the trail system— shifting of the location of some existing trails and addition of new trails. A few“ unofficial / unsanctioned” trails in newly developed areas have been closed.
A revised and differently sized and formatted trail map is expected to be completed by the fall of 2017— stay tuned.
We are interested in introducing residents of the LLA community to the trail network and are always looking for volunteers to help us with light physical maintenance work on YOUR trails.
