The John Muir Scholarship( JMS) was created in October of 2015 to support Frederick County students interested in pursuing a field of study which aligns with the overall mission of the Sierra Club. Today, in our third year, we are proud to offer this scholarship to students in four of Frederick County’ s High Schools Including Oakdale High School. With more than 370 Sierra Club Groups nationwide the Catoctin Group is the only group offering a scholarship. Our goal is to eventually offer the scholarship in all ten of Frederick County High Schools.
At the JMS we take seriously our goal to support and encourage the next generation of naturalists, clean air and clean water activists, climate scientists, and wildlife conservationists. As the director of the JMS I can honestly say there is nothing more rewarding than to award a scholarship, with its foundation deep in the grass roots of environmental activism, in front of the student’ s friends, families, and school teachers and administrators during the June Senior Awards Ceremony. Based on the Senior Awards Day events I have had the privilege to attend, I can say with certainty the Sierra Club is the only organization offering an environmental scholarship in Frederick County and possibly in Maryland.
Last year our scholarship awardees included a student graduating at the top of her class with aspirations to pursue a career as an officer with the Maryland Department of Natural Resources ensuring our states wildlands remain protected and wild for everyone to enjoy. The JMS awarded a scholarship to a student interested in researching the biodiversity on the Galapagos Islands. Another student was interested in teaching sustainable farming and restoring forests in Latin America. It could be that our scholarship helps to support the next Rachel Carson, Jane Goodall, Dian Fossey, or maybe the next John Muir.
The future belongs to our young people, who are the cornerstone of our program. For more information on how to apply or how to make a donation, please contact Lee Popkin, Director of The John Muir Scholarship, at lee. popkin @ mdsierra. org or 443.745.7637. One hundred percent of your tax deductible donations go directly to our Frederick County students. Please feel free to reach out with any questions.
Onward!
