During the October work session the group worked on the Balmoral Trail. While they pruned and cleared the main trail from the village entrance sign down to the stone foundation and chimney and the side section that connects the end of Balmoral Overlook to the main trail, the main emphasis that day was to give the foundation area a good clearing. The foundation is surrounded by a multiple of vines, vegetation, and small“ volunteer” trees. While this area is addressed whenever Trailblazers Committee works on this trail, the vegetation is composed of a lot of fast growing invasive species such as multi-flora rose, honeysuckle, mile-a-minute, Japanese stilt grass, as well as wild raspberry and wineberry which must be continually cut back. The group spent most of their time pruning back and removing the vegetation and grape vines within the foundation area and on the sides of the chimney. Trash was removed, including the remnants of a tent that had been left in the interior of the foundation some time before. Pink ribbons were added to the tree branches along the entire length of the trail in areas where the location of the trail bed may be confusing. Please do not remove these pink ribbons, as well as those on other trails in the community, since they are valuable aids to those folks who are not so familiar to some of the trails.
While Girl Scout Gold Award recipient Madison Buckwalter completed her North Shore Spring Restoration project in late 2016, a sign explaining the specifics of the area was not added at the start of the trail until late this summer. The spring area is at the end of a short trail--built by Madison and her volunteers--that leads off the Coldstream Lake Trail just east of North Shore Way. The colorful sign describes what a spring is and talks about how there are numerous natural springs that feed into Lake Linganore. Stop by the location to read about the North Shore Spring and enjoy a pleasant walk down the trail to its end at the spring.

Winter Weather
Plan
The LLA Winter Weather Plan is to be enacted any time there is the potential for a winter precipitation event including snow, sleet and / or freezing rain as pronounced by the National Weather Service.
The purpose of this plan is to ensure that roadways are clear of vehicle traffic and parked cars to allow for the safe passage of snow removal equipment and emergency service vehicles.
This plan will go into effect no more than eight hours prior to the forecasted weather event and will remain in effect no more than eight hours after precipitation has ceased.
Residents are asked to do the following in snow emergency situations:
• Do not park on the streets; park in your garage or driveway so that snow plows can do their job and emergency vehicles can get through, if needed.
• Please remove all basketball hoops, soccer nets, and other portable items that may be damaged by snow plows.
• Clear snow from your driveways, driveway culverts, sidewalks, parking areas, heating compressors, mailboxes, nearby fire hydrants, storm drains and trash container areas.
• Report hazards and areas in need of maintenance to your Village Manager. In case of an EMERGENCY involving community roads and properties after office hours, call 301-293-3802. The information will immediately be reported to LLA staff.
• Four-wheel drive and snowmobile owners are asked to be available to assist neighbors with emergency medical access needs or other service assistance.
• The following roads are deemed“ Snow Emergency Routes.” Parking along these roads will be prohibited during a storm event once the Winter Weather Plan is effective. Vehicles parked along these roads during a snow event will be towed at the owner’ s expense.
