Mitchellville Crock-Pot Pilot Program
February 28, 2017
The Mitchellville First Congregational United Church of
Christ and Mitchellville Freedom for Youth have collaborated to pilot a
youth crock-pot cooking class to teach local youth how to make
nutritious meals, the benefits of healthy eating habits, and introduce
them to a variety of global food and nutrition topics.
The pilot program looks to immerse student participants in a hands-on-learning experience where
they are introduced to professionals in related fields, including researchers, dietitians, culinary
students, chefs and organic farmers. With each class, students will share a sample meal of what they
will eventually make with their own crock-pot's, prep ingredients for a meal to take home to their
families, interact and learn from a professional guest speaker and discuss a nutritional topic related to
a scripture reading.
The class will begin in March and meet weekly for six weeks.
Each class will take on a different theme, allowing participants
to learn a variety of techniques. This initiative aims to empower
students with life skills and future employment training as an
effort to prevent poverty and give hope for a future.
