Continental Biomass Industries
(CBI) hosted its 2017 Factory Forum
recently at its global headquarters
in Newton, putting on live
demonstrations and workshops
for guests from around the world.
The three-day event saw guests
from Sweden, Brazil, and various
businesses throughout the United
States, including local customers
who partnered with CBI for the live
demonstrations.
“Hosting the forum here at
the CBI Factory gives new and
existing customers a close look at
our machines and the dedicated
people who make it happen here
at the shop,” said Art Murphy,
Director of Sales and Marketing for
Terex Environmental Equipment,
Americas.
“It’s great for guests to meet
some of our veteran employees
who helped build this company and
spent the last few decades bringing
the CBI advantage to end-users.”
The event kicked-off with an
opening reception and cocktail
hour at the Portsmouth Harbor
Events and Conference Center,
followed by a factory tour through
the CBI facility the next morning.
Long-time CBI employees shared
company history with guests and
led tour groups through the shop
floor to get an intimate look at
grinders being prepared for recent
hurricane debris clean up.
Tours were headlined by the
famous CBI Road-Mill, which was
first put into service for Hurricane
Andrew clean up in 1991 and
has logged more than 60,000
hours. Ingerson Transportation
brought the machine down from
their business in Jefferson, New
Hampshire for a static display.
Neal Nowick, General Manager
of Terex Environmental Equipment,
welcomed the crowd and was
the first to speak during a series
of keynote presentations that
included overviews and forecasts
for the CBI and Ecotec product
lines. Terex Financial Services
presented and was followed by a
Tier 4 Compliance Overview from
CAT to give in-depth looks to topics
of recent interest in the industry.
CBI partnered with Chappell
Tractor in Brentwood, NH for live
screw splitter demonstrations.
“The CBI Stump Shear is a
stump’s worst nightmare,” Aaron
Benway, CBI Attachments Sales &
Product Manager, said.
The CBI Log and Stump Screw
is designed to split oversized butt
logs, pole wood and stumps into
more manageable-sized material to
be further processed into firewood,
wood fuel or other value-added
finished products. Splits wood up
to 7 ft in diameter and up to 20 feet
in length with ease and efficiency
and without the need for a larger
machine. Ideal for all excavators,
log loaders, front-end loader/
backhoes, farm tractors and skid
steer units.
George Whiteman wanted to
purchase a CBI XLP Screw Splitter
to expand the services he offered.
He purchased a Hyundai 140
Excavator from Donnie Shepard
of Chappell Tractor to mount the
screw splitter. Benway sold the
screw to George and worked with
Chappell Tractor on the installation
and set up of the CBI Screw
Splitter.
“The screw has worked
awesome,” Whiteman said. “We’ve
had real good luck with it, even
with the bigger logs breaking right
apart. It will pick the logs up and

move them around. I can get in and
out of places much easier with it
on a smaller machine. It makes life
much simpler. The whole setup is
very cost effective.”
Whiteman has a 20 t tag along
trailer that he moves the 30,000
lb (13.6 t) excavator with. He says
the XLP mounted on the excavator
is more than enough to lift, place,
and split any of the material he
encounters.
“It was great to work with both
George and Donnie to ensure
everything was setup properly
so George could hit the ground
running and be successful in his
new venture,” said Benway.
“Immediately upon picking up
the machine, George was able to
transport the machine to a project
in Rhode Island to split oversized
logs for a large mulch producing
client.”
The attachment is designed
to grub, pull, backfill, shear,
split and load, making uniform
processed material out of the
biggest stumps and butt logs
at a rate of 50 t/h or greater.
Two massive ripper teeth pull
stumps out of the ground,
while the reinforced steel plate
backfills the stump hole.
The Stump Shear’s dual-
action cylinder allows the knife
to retract fully out of the way
when grubbing and excavating
stumps. By not remaining fixed
in a low position, it does not
interfere with work or cause
unnecessary stress to the shear
or excavator from unwanted
knife strikes.
Chappell Tractor also supplied
a Takeuchi TL12V2 Track Skid Steer
for CBI to mount an XP Screw
Splitter with its universal skid steer
quick-attach mounting plate. After
hooking up the quick-disconnect
hydraulic hoses and setting the
machine to low-flow mode – within
minutes – the screw operated
flawlessly for guests at the CBI
Factory Forum.
Benway appreciated the
cooperation and camaraderie
between Donnie Shepard and the
Chappell Tractor team in both the
sale of the screw and installation.
