The L180H HL ’ s Boom Suspension
System ( BSS ) boosts productivity by up to 20 %

It doesn ’ t really matter whether you ’ re in the sawmill , the woodyard or the forest , cranes and grapples need to be strong , versatile and have the appropriate reach .

Subtle variations from manufacturer to manufacturer mean that the battleground for market share is fought over greater suitability to a particular task , the general agility and operability or the arm , and the comfort of the operator .
The Volvo L180H HL ( High Lift ) has been designed to achieve “ unrivalled ” lift height and reach in log-handling applications . Featuring Volvo ’ s unique high-lift arm system , the L180H HL not only stacks logs high – maximizing available space in the timber yard – but can also reach further and handle logs quickly and securely , for efficient loading and unloading .
Powerful , intelligent hydraulics ensure fast response and smooth operation through superior control of both the load and the attachment . Speed and safety of each work cycle is further increased by the machine ’ s superb stability , which permits fast ground speeds when travelling with a load .
With an operating weight of 34 t , the L180H HL features a powerful , 13 litre , 6-cylinder Volvo engine developing 246 kW / 334 hp and fully compliant with the latest Tier 4 Final / Stage lV emissions regulations , but is also available as Stage lllA for lesser regulated markets .
Possibly the industry ’ s most effective workspace , the Volvo Care Cab offers space , a high level of comfort , ergonomically positioned controls to reduce operator fatigue and is ROPS / FOPS certified . Visibility – forward , lateral and rear – is excellent , thanks to a large expanse of glass and the slopeaway engine hood design .
A choice of grapples , from 3.2-3.8 m 3 , allows the L180H HL to handle up to a massive 8,800 kg working load with ease , with a height under the grapple of 5 800 mm . The grapple ’ s tilt rotator unit enables it to be positioned very
precisely to get the safest and most effective approach to the logs , which facilitates placing or picking up logs from the middle of the stack .
An integrated damping function in the grapple-tilt cylinder effectively counteracts swaying and provides better control of the load ; especially useful when operating on uneven terrain .
To ensure efficient , profitable operation , the L180H HL is loaded with productivity enhancing and fuel-saving features . Volvo ’ s unique OptiShift technology combines the company ’ s patented Reverse by Braking ( RBB ) technology and a torque converter with lock-up . Lock-up creates a direct drive between the engine and transmission – eliminating power losses in the torque converter and reducing fuel consumption by up to 18 %.
Sensing the loader ’ s change in direction , the RBB function slows the machine by automatically applying the service brakes , increasing fuel efficiency as well as operator comfort and is ideal for short cycle or truck loading applications .
The L180H HL ’ s Boom Suspension System ( BSS ) boosts productivity by up to 20 % by absorbing shock and reducing the bouncing that occurs when operating on rough ground . This enables faster and more comfortable work cycles while also reducing stress on the drivetrain , extending component life .
Should the accelerator be used excessively , risking rpm exceeding the most economic operating range , Volvo ’ s unique Eco pedal provides a further fuel consumption reducing benefit by applying mechanical push-back force , encouraging – training even – the operator to ease off the throttle .
With safety never underestimated , an optional fire suppression system , consisting of up to 16 nozzles , is automatically activated inside the engine compartment should excessive heat is detected .
While the L180H HL may be unique ; Volvo ’ s standard wheel loaders remain an ever-popular
sight in stockyards . The latest H-Series models – L150H , L180H and L220H – provide between them a range of seven unloading grapples from 3.1-4 m 3 with grapple lengths from 2,660 mm to 3,200 mm depending on the model . Eight sorting grapples are also available in the same dimensions .
In addition to key features they share with the L180H HL , these models feature Volvo ’ s unique Torque Parallel ( TP ) linkage , delivering high breakout force and excellent parallel movement throughout the entire lifting range .
Volvo ’ s larger models – L250H and L350F – are also used in wood handling applications . L350F units destined for heavyweight logging work feature a heavier rear counterweight for increased stability , additional grease lines and reversal of the bell crank to generate a higher breakout force . For all Volvo H-Series wheel loaders , ease of service is assured thanks to the latest design , electrically activated , wide-opening engine hood that allows quick and easy service access to the engine compartment and components . Maximum uptime for maximum productivity and profitable operation .
In the forest A result of Volvo ’ s Special Application Solutions team , the latest , excavator-based EC220E , EC250E , EC300E and EC380E tracked carriers are built and specially adapted for the toughest of forestry environments .
The EC250E is available in log loader version , featuring a dedicated , straight log loader boom and log loader arm . When equipped with a heavy-duty boom and arm , high-lift boom riser and rotating grapple , all Volvo ’ s latest tracked forestry carriers can also load and unload with ease .
The boom riser allows for an additional lift height of 1,635 mm , facilitating accurate placement of logs when stacking . When not engaged in loading / unloading , these ‘ multi-taskers ’ can tackle many applications – stump harvesting , trenching , planting and building forest roads .
Capable of high productivity ,
