YOU’LL UNDERSTAND IT
WHEN YOU’RE OLDER.
NOEL PHILIP SUZIE
Noel was born in Omeo, Victoria
in 1942, and is the middle child
of five children. Noel’s father was
a postmaster and they lived in
Omeo, Trafalgar and Cheltenham.
Noel taught full time as a teacher
for two years: the first year in
a Catholic secondary school
in Sydney and the second at
Morwell High School, followed
by four years tertiary education
at Melbourne University and the
Secondary Teachers’ College.
This was followed by 13 years
teaching at Collingwood and
Brunswick Technical Schools with
three years secondment in Papua
New Guinea. Noel left teaching
and moved into the financial
services industry, initially as a
financial planner in all capacities
of consultant, franchisee and,
eventually, co-owner of a
practice until retiring in 2002.
Noel was married in 1968, had
a daughter in 1969, divorced
in 1988, re-married in 1994,
divorced in 1998, and is currently
in a long-term relationship of 14
years with a lady but they do not
cohabit. Noel believes society
does not embrace sex openly
enough or the contribution that
sexual activity makes to the
overall health of the citizens and
society itself. Noel hopes to make
a positive contribution to these
perceptions by being a part of
this show. Philip is 73 and considers
himself a New Yorker although
he has lived in Melbourne for
more than 37 years. As a New
Yorker, Philip is a combination
of idealism and cynicism. Philip
underwent a transformation
during college (university) years,
and left college with clear-cut
beliefs and determined goals.
Notwithstanding attending Law
School, Philip never intended to
practice law. However, events
intervened, and Philip practiced
for about 30 years. For the
most part Philip enjoyed the
work (including being called
compulsive), particularly within
a partnership. Philip came
to Australia married to an
Australian, and believes that he
might have been at primary fault
for the failure of the marriage: “a
somewhat developmental and
cultural clash.” Presently retired—
with the conclusion of a complex
case—Philip is reasonably
satisfied and insists on doing his
own thing, an attitude that began
in those college days. Suzie was born in Melbourne
at the Royal Women’s Hospital.
Suzie’s family rented in St. Kilda
for first part of their life until
they bought a home and moved
to Sandringham. Suzie grew up
holidaying in the Torquay Caravan
Park. After schooling, Suzie
spent travelled through Europe
and worked in London, travelled
to North America and then to
Central America volunteering as
a teacher. Suzie spent 15 years in
the advertising business, and in
1982 she married and year later
gave birth. In 1988 Suzie divorced
and moved to Torquay and lived
there for 20 years. Suzie spent
the last eight years gaining
additional training in counselling
and child care in Sydney, and
returned to Melbourne last year
to be a grandmother to two
beautiful boys. Suzie is excited
about performing again and
picking up on a previous life as a
budding young actress.
Philip says being a part of
this project is interesting, and
even more interesting has
been hearing what the other
participants had to say.
