THE GRANDFATHER DRUM Michelle Derosier , Ontario , 11m , animation This unique animation follows the story of Naamowin ’ s drum , a drum revered for its healing powers by the Anishinabek of the upper Berens River . Upon the death of his grandson , Naamowin builds a healing drum given to him in a dream that can restore life . However , Christianity and government have other plans that disrupt the delicate balance between the sky-world and the underworld .
NO CULTURAL VALUE : THE ARTWORK OF ARMAND LEMIEZ Mike Maryniuk , Manitoba , 19m , documentary A Manitoba folk painter and sculptor tried unsuccessfully for nearly 10 years to will his land , sculptures and 500 paintings to the province of Manitoba . Folk and outsider art is universally celebrated ….. except in Manitoba , where it is considered disposable , or in the case of Armand Lemiez and the assessment by the provincial Minister of Culture “ to have no cultural value ”.
