THE GRANDFATHER DRUM Michelle Derosier, Ontario, 11m, animation This unique animation follows the story of Naamowin’ s drum, a drum revered for its healing powers by the Anishinabek of the upper Berens River. Upon the death of his grandson, Naamowin builds a healing drum given to him in a dream that can restore life. However, Christianity and government have other plans that disrupt the delicate balance between the sky-world and the underworld.
NO CULTURAL VALUE: THE ARTWORK OF ARMAND LEMIEZ Mike Maryniuk, Manitoba, 19m, documentary A Manitoba folk painter and sculptor tried unsuccessfully for nearly 10 years to will his land, sculptures and 500 paintings to the province of Manitoba. Folk and outsider art is universally celebrated ….. except in Manitoba, where it is considered disposable, or in the case of Armand Lemiez and the assessment by the provincial Minister of Culture“ to have no cultural value”.
