On behalf of the President & Board Members of
The Passchendaele Society.
We wholeheartedly commend Auckland Choral on their splendid
initiative to perform a commemorative concert at St Matthews-
in-the City, Auckland on Sunday 28 May 2017.
We are particularly encouraged that they wish to reach out to
the younger generation, which is very much in tune with our
own focus, as it is they who must pick up the baton after the
Centenary to keep the tragedy forever in people’s minds.
Traditionally composers, poets and musicians have committed
their talents to the memory of tragic events, and thus created a
lasting recognition of fateful occasions in history. It is, therefore,
most appropriate that Auckland Choral should recognise the
national significance of Passchendaele by performing what will
undoubtedly be a moving concert of the highest quality. We
anticipate that this will be a major contribution to this year’s
remembrance of the tragedy of Passchendaele.
