In 1999 , seven neurointensivists created an independent , international , multidisciplinary organization whose mission was to improve outcomes for patients with life-threatening neurological illnesses . From this grassroots beginning , the Neurocritical Care Society ( NCS ) continues to grow to over 1,400 national and international members . In 2016 , the NCS has gained over 500 new members around the globe . NCS ' s Annual Meeting has also grown steadily , attracting around 1,000 attendees for the past three years . The NCS is the only trusted resource for information on quality patient care , professional collaboration , research , advocacy and training , and education .
