Safety Spotlight Celebrate the Holidays Safely November –December, 2017 A busy time of year has begun and many of us will be traveling to spend time with family and friends. When it comes to car seats, this topic can be downright overwhelming! This Safety Spotlight edition breaks down several key points to keeping your kids safe when traveling in the vehicle. Be sure you talk with your kids about how their car seat keeps them safe and why it is important they are properly secured on every ride, every time. How important are the labels on the car seats? VERY! The labels on car seats can provide life saving information. Did you know there are weight maximums for using lower anchors? There are ~ and every seat is different, so check your label! The label says it’s safe, but is it ‘best practice’? This child is 8-years old and weighs 50 pounds. Labels on this car seat tell us this booster seat may be connected by a seat belt with a child weighing 40 pounds (and 45”). However, what is the best practice? A 5-point harness is definitely best practice until the child outgrows the height of the seat or the weight of the harness straps. Reading the labels is important! 248 children under 5 years old were saved by car seats in 2015 Life Preserva on Through Public Educa on  Fire Education Police Education Renni Burt Valerie Snyder [email protected] 817-748-8349 *Statistics from NHTSA [email protected] Visit us on Facebook at: SouthlakePublicSafety 817-748-8173
