By Colin McKeown
The New Fly Fisher Show
More and more anglers are learning how to fly fish and lodge operators throughout Algoma are seeing people use flies like never before . One of the best species to cast a fly to is northern pike . They are super aggressive and their strikes are always explosive ! Algoma is blessed with some incredible pike fishing throughout this massive region . The pike here are large , plentiful and exceptionally strong thanks to long term catch & release policies and cold clean water . The best windows for catching large northern pike on a fly are May thru to mid-July , then end of August to the end of September . Some of the biggest pike are caught in September when evenings are getting colder and water temperatures are beginning to drop .
Recommended equipment for fly fishing includes : a nine foot 9 / 10 weight rod in a fast action coupled to a reel with a good quality drag system , you will need both floating lines and full sinking type lines to effectively fish all parts of the water column , 50-pound leaders are necessary with wire bite tippits of 30 - 50 pounds . For flies we recommend large streamers in white / red , black and orange / black . Topwater action can be exceptionally exciting and large poppers , or Dahberg Divers work well .
Catching large northern pike on a fly rod is one of the ultimate thrills of angling and in Algoma Country you have access to lots of different options to consider . For more information about fly fishing in Algoma go to www . algomaflyfishing . com
