ALUMNI
VOICES
“I wasn’t expected to make
it to high school, let alone
graduate. I now work with
the California Department
of Public Health to reduce
the prevalence of obesity
among low-income residents.
Influenced by my family’s
experience, I chose a career
in public service to serve
the people.”
MAYRA D.
B.S., University of California, Santa Cruz
M.P.H., San Francisco State University
“Compared to my parents, my husband and I have
a more flexible lifestyle that allows us to be finan-
cially and socially independent. We have a say in
terms of what careers we want to pursue and can
travel to other countries as much as we want.”
MIRIAM O.
B.A., University of California, Berkeley
M.P.A., University of Southern California
“I graduated in May 2008 at the beginning of
the recession: there wasn’t much work for a new
graduate with little experience. I joined Summit
Public Schools at an entry-level position and grew
with the school. I am now the associate director of
admissions at Menlo School where I am responsi-
ble for bringing in students from all backgrounds
and making sure they thrive.”
