POWERFUL SHARING IN OUR STATEWIDE EDUCATION NETWORK Clinical Education Summits, organized by our Office of Clinical Education, harnessed the power of our statewide consortium of health systems and hospitals to create “ideal places for our patient care and for student education,” said Executive Dean Ken Johnson, D.O. More than 100 medical education professionals from our health care systems and hospitals throughout Ohio attended each daylong leadership development gathering. Presentations, active learning and networking sessions focused on sharing information among partners on topics like virtual reality in medical education, adaptive design in patient care and developing interprofessional health care teams. Other sessions showcased Ohio University and partner hospital efforts to transform health care and health care education. 922 TOTAL ENROLLMENT ACROSS ALL HERITAGE COLLEGE CAMPUSES SHARED GOVERNANCE With our unprecedented growth over the past five years, increased organizational complexity and ambiguity about decision-making responsibilities inspired us to clearly define shared governance. In 2016, working with the American Association of Medical Colleges, an elected faculty group led a college-wide initiative to develop principles for shared governance intended to enhance organizational effectiveness. The group developed inclusive and sustainable principles, founded on the assumption that all individuals are working in the best interest of the college. These principles emphasize collaborative decision-making, transparency in roles and responsibilities, and solution-based, open communication. Additionally, a new organizational structure is being implemented that is already leading to more transparent decision-making and clear responsibilities within the college. 23
