FLAGLER CENTENNIAL
Flagler County Celebrates
100 Years!
How It All Started :
On June 11, 1917, residents voted
overwhelmingly to approve the establishment
of Flagler County by carving out portions of
both St. Johns and Volusia counties. Efforts
began immediately to institute a county form
of government in accordance with the
Constitution of the State of Florida, and
naming of the county.
Isaac I. Moody, the former chairman of the St.
Johns County Commission, was instrumental
in the creation of Flagler County, but he
declined to have the County named in his
honor. He recommended instead that the
County be named for Henry Flagler, a
businessman and entrepreneur who opened
Florida to the rest of the nation by bringing
dependable rail transportation to the state.
