Offering excellent cross-country skiing through beautiful rolling foothills forest, the Hornbeck Cross
Country Skiing Forest Recreation Area is located 15 kilometres Northwest of Edson.
Follow Highway 16 west from Edson about 4 kilometres, and then turn north on the Schlick Road
(Range Road 181A). Follow the Schlick Road 8.5 kilometres to its end at a T-intersection, then turn
left and follow the signs to the ski area.
The Hornbeck Area is a legally designated Forest Recreation
Area reserved for non-motorized recreation under the Alberta Forests Act.
Volunteers of the Edson Muskeg Flyers Nordic Ski Club maintain the trails and facilities, with support
contributed by industry, municipalities, and individuals in the district.
The 30 kilometres of trails in the Hornbeck Area are groomed for both skating and classical skiing.
There are trails for both novices and intermediate skiers. The staging area provides a warm-up
shelter with a wood stove, picnic tables, pit toilets, and a parking lot.
