At first glance, Iquitos is a tourist’ s paradise. The city is flourishing with vibrant restaurants serving the most fragrant of cuisines, busy streets and European-style stores selling all sorts of clothing and hi-tech devices. Large cruise ships mingle with small canoes, luxurious tiled mansions neighbor mud huts. However, underneath all the neon-lights and fancy apparel, Iquitos is a dreary place.
It hurts my heart immensely to admit, but Iquitos is not a good place to call home. The city struggles with sexual promiscuity, alcoholism, drug abuse, child prostitution, infidelity, and homosexuality. Scattered around the city there are signs that warn against child molestation.
I struggled to find the encouragement to stay in beautiful Iquitos plagued by all the sin. But God controls all things in His magnificent will and He had a cure for Iquitos.
In July of 2016, I had the opportunity to participate in the ABBA Peru Pastors’ conference. It was here that I met Pastor James for the first time and when I heard from his lips the vision God gave to the HHK WMC, my heart was moved greatly. This was the answer for the pain in my heart. I returned to Iquitos with joy and peace, but also determination. I called together a meeting with youth leaders and pastors all throughout Iquitos and I shared with them the doors that God was opening. We prayed earnestly and faithfully for we knew that the Holy Spirit could save our beloved city.
God had started His treatment in Iquitos. We are going to start ABBA Iquitos next year, a decision that was made unanimously. God wants to train the misguided youth of Iquitos to become true Christians in God’ s holy army. He will use them to bring His good news to all the corners of Peru and the world. Glory to our Father God who has opened the doors in Iquitos. Pray with us for the children and youth! Iquitos finally has the opportunity to see and experience a true revival and it all starts here.
