WEC launched the Safer After Sandy project to provide information to the public so recovery and rebuilding after Sandy wouldn’t create new health and safety hazards. WEC released Failure To Act: New Jersey Jobs and Communities Are Still At Risk From Toxic Chemical Disasters report, documenting that New Jerseyans are still at risk from a catastrophic release of toxic chemicals. 2014 WEC released Danger in the Dark: How Gov. Christie Helps Oil, Chemical and Railroad Companies Cover Up Potential Catastrophes report, which documented the failure of the NJ State Emergency Response Commission (SERC) to provide access to local emergency response plans, as well as the need for public access to crude oil train information. WEC co-coordinated a demonstration at Children’s Place offices in Secaucus with survivors of the Rana Plaza collapse in Bangladesh. Healthy Schools Now with Trenton Healthy Schools won a commitment by the Schools Development Authority to rebuild Trenton Central High School. WEC with our partner New Labor recruited 250+ low wage, often temporary, Latino workers and other workers to our first joint Worker Memorial Day educational forum. WEC launched the Respect Our Right to Know campaign demanding Governor Christie take action to protect our lives, jobs, health, schools, and businesses. 2015 WEC, working in conjunction with the NJ State Industrial Union Council and 25 other community, labor, and environmental groups, won a Supreme Court decision to uphold New Jersey’s landmark whistleblower law. Dan Fatton named WEC’s second Executive Director. WEC defeated industries attempts to weaken the Toxic Catastrophe Prevention Act (TCPA) program by removing anhydrous ammonia from the list of hazardous substances covered. 2016 WEC launched Runaway Inequality campaign in partnership with The Labor Institute, NJEA and New Jersey Policy Perspective aimed at addressing and reversing the outsized influence of corporations and ending the financial strip mining of our economy by Wall Street firms. WEC and IBT Local 877 filed 60-day notice against the city of Linden for violating the Emergency Planning and Community Right to Know Act by denying public access to their Emergency Response Plan. ----------------------------------------------In addition: WEC has provided quality, interactive training on occupational and environmental health and safety hazards for over 10,000 workers and managers over the 30 years, including hosting train-the-trainer and public programs, and hundreds of on-site workshops. WEC provided consultation services utilizing our technical assistance network of health professionals, safety and health specialists, epidemiologists, doctors, and industrial hygienists to eliminate and abate specific hazards in many different industries such as chemical facilities, manufacturing, healthcare, and schools. WEC developed curriculum, training materials, an action guide, factsheets, and surveys for prevention of workplace and environmental hazards. 4
