2015 DISTRICTS YEAR-IN-REVIEW
KAUAI HAWAII DISTRICT TENNIS ASSOCIATION www. kauai. usta. com
CAROLYN LUM, District President hawaii96766 @ yahoo. com
Kauai Tennis Association( KTA) continues to support local tournaments at Poipu Kai Tennis Club for the past 8 years. These events, that are open to junior and adult players for extra fun and competition, have raised over $ 33,000 for the Kauai United Way thanks to good player participation and Poipu Kai’ s donation of court use. We were sadden with the passing of Poipu Kai’ s teaching pro Hattie Somerville who blessed the island with her and husband John’ s awesome presence on Kauai.
Participation in the USTA Adult League grew thanks to the persistence of League Coordinator Rosemary Smythe. She is sharing her duties with Dan Miyamoto and Carolyn Lum in 2016. Thanks and congratulations go out to the players who shared good fellowship on Kauai and at Sectionals!
On the junior scene, Island School, Kapaa High, Kauai High and Waimea High continue to offer competitive and fun play. Interest continues to grow with the junior programs offered around the island. Thanks go to Sheila Kurosu, Madeleine Dreith and Kim Kinberg for inspiring the kids with Schools Programs.
KTA invites players of all levels and ages to join in our local Charity tournaments, Adult League and Play to Learn Programs! Call( 808) 651-8213, email mailto: hawaii96766 @ yahoo. com or talk to the KTA board members: Carolyn Lum, Dan Miyamoto, Helen Young, Ronald Hosaka, Shannon Burkman, Jerry Green and Juan Lorenzo.

Maui District works to grow participation, sponsor players-events-programs, as well as maintaining relationships within the County to ensure recreational resources are in place for the tennis community.
Sponsorships, funding, and incentives are an important part of a Districts role. This year over $ 10k was distributed to players, clubs and families.
Recognition and rewards are a key part of realizing the efforts made by many. Here are some of the praises we’ d like to highlight.
This past Fall, the District hosted a“ Captains Recognition Breakfast” that allowed us to say,“ Mahalo” to our league captains and recognize their dedication. The event gave MDTA and captains an opportunity to talk about the upcoming 2016 league season, gather ideas and just have fun.
To all the VOLUNTEERS. You are essential to the success of an event. Whether you serve as a ball runner, ticket sales or as a court monitor for the Challenger, Sectionals or at a local tournament, the District commends you for giving your time.
Going for“ the brass ring” or otherwise called advancing to the USTA National Championships were the Wailea Mavericks— 4.5 Men from the Adult 40 & Over league.
And congratulations to the Maui recipients who attended the USTA HPS Tennis Awards / Banquet: South Maui Tennis( Barbara Wallace & Tricia Wilstead) for Organization of the Year, Lee Killett the Maui Service Award, and to Ted Gee the Special Service Award for his years of service as the Chair for the HPS Adult League Committee.
This was a brief snapshot of 2015. As we move into 2016 the District members have all renewed their commitment to goals that focus on managing league costs, growing tennis for both leagues and school programs, partnering with our local tennis professionals, and offering a great experience for all who play or want to play tennis. Those interested in becoming more active with District programs, by all means contact me and be an asset to your community.
