Hilti
The design for Hilti comprises a 1,700m²
warehouse and a 2,000m² office building, which
is based in Atterbury’s Waterfall Logistics Precinct.
As the site is situated in the industrial precinct of
Waterfall City, as well as along the N1 freeway, the
building had to be one that would be memorable
among the rest of the many distinguished
developments. This factor influenced the office
and warehouse combination aesthetic, which is the
main attracting feature facing Bridal Veil Road, the
new connecting bridge to Waterfall City Commercial
and Residential Districts. As a result, the finished
project assures that all expectations set by the
developers and tenants alike have not only been
met, but rather eclipsed.
For this project, which introduces a new aesthetic
approach to warehouse design and efficiency,
Empowered Spaces Architects have taken an ultra-
modern approach to the design and have succeeded
in disguising the distinctive 1,700m² warehouse,
which is mainly used to service Hilti products and
to provide training for the Hilti product end-users,
with the 2,000m² modern office building.
Juxtaposed by the surrounding developments
of the precinct, one is greeted at the entrance by
a mirage of high performance, environmentally-
friendly tinted glazing, fringed by spandrel panels.
The glass façade allows for maximum natural sunlight
to illuminate the lobby and office space, while the
spandrel panels limit the harsh western sunlight and
allow for comfortable working conditions. Energy
efficient fittings and air conditioning systems are
apparent throughout, with sufficient insulation in
14
the walls and roof allowing for optimum conditions
throughout the rest of the building. The unique
angled roof aids in the modern aesthetic of the
warehouse, as it wraps over the office space, while
encapsulating the otherwise invisible warehouse
and peaks over the north facing façade.
The interiors of the Hilti office building were
imagined and created by Empowered Spaces’
counterpart, Ispaces, whose concept was derived
from Hilti’s corporate colours and equipment. This
meant blending bright red elements into subtle
and understated monochrome surfaces. Hilti
products formed part of the office decals as well
as the signage. The open plan office resulted in the
utilisation of a flexible space that can be rearranged
at any juncture.
Overall, the design for Hilti’s was based on a
unique concept that is not only aesthetically pleasing
but, more importantly, takes into consideration
factors such as sustainability, user satisfaction
and industry and community perception, in turn
enhancing a well-respected corporate identity.
