Absent surprises form equity markets and the Fed , the performance of business investment could make or break 2017 . On this front , there ’ s not much momentum . Over the past couple of years , four measures of business investment – U . S . Nondefense Capital Goods Shipments , New Orders of Durable Goods , New Orders of Durable Goods Excluding Transportation Equipment , and the Business Investment component of GDP – indicate very weak conditions for an economy that should be entering a stronger expansion . Infrastructure spending , tax reductions , and other policy changes advocated by Trump during the election could reverse this tide – presuming Congress goes along with him .
