DID YOU KNOW?
Survival rates in Ireland have increased in the last 5 years( from 76 % to 82 %) as a result of increased awareness and more effective screening. Survival rates in Northern European countries is currently at 96 % ….. suggestions are that younger women are better educated about their breast health from late teens / early 20’ s coupled with the provision of annual checks / screening by their health service.
In 2012, BCI conducted research among 500 young women aged 18-45 years about their knowledge of good breast health. o All respondents knew that breast cancer is the leading cancer among women in Ireland … 1 in 9 can be affected in their lifetime o 95 % understood the importance of early detection for breast cancer but admitted to not knowing how to check themselves properly or indeed what signs and symptoms to look for. o 60 % thought that breast cancer would always be a lump / pain in the breast o 45 % thought that breast cancer could only happen to women over the age of 60 years.
• Breast Cancer Ireland, as a result of this survey and in accordance with its mandate to provide education and awareness on the importance of breast health among women of all ages- created a new free to download app“ Breast Aware”. o This unique app offers to send a discreet monthly reminder to your phone as well as providing a simulated step by step video guide on how to perform a self breast examination outlining the possible symptoms to consider. The rationale is that if you know what is normal today – should an abnormality arise it will be detected early and the outcome will be a lot more positive.
