2016 Review - Breast Cancer Ireland Dec 2016 | Page 2

Aisling Hurley CEO Breast Cancer Ireland

I’ m very happy to introduce our first newsletter, highlighting some of the amazing events that have taken place throughout the year as well as those organised on our behalf, coupled with an insight into how these funds are used to progress our research and awareness objectives. Breast Cancer is the most common type of cancer among women, with 1 in 9 women developing the disease over the course of their lifetime. Currently, we have 2,800 new cases diagnosed each year. Breast Cancer Ireland was established to raise funds to support pioneering research and awareness programmes. With no government support, we rely totally on the generosity of the public and our corporate partnerships. It’ s your fantastic support that has enabled us to achieve significant advancements over the past 5 years:
Through sophisticated blood tests, each patient is provided with a personalised & tailored treatment plan for their particular form of breast cancer 50 % fewer patients require chemotherapy to combat the disease Survival rates improve from 75 % to the current rate of 82 % Continuous investment in International Clinical Trials showing massive promise with over 50 % of certain tumors being eradicated through combined hormonal therapy Investment in state of the art surgical equipment for optimal patient benefit
Awareness remains a key component of our efforts.. and that is why earlier this year we launched our TY & Outreach Programme. We aim to take the fear factor out of a diagnosis- If we can make younger women more breast aware, we will ultimately save lives. We have recruited Outreach Coordinators who travel to schools, women ' s groups and companies with our Breast Health Your Wealth programme, outlining the key signs and symptoms to look out for as well advice on how best to perform a routine self breast examination. If women know what is normal today, should an abnormality arise, they will detect it earlier and the treatment outcome( if needed) will be more positive.
With your continued support we hope to continue on the path to fulfilling our vision:
