WINTER
Ice Fishing
SnowmobilinG
With giant wilderness spaces, Ontario’s
Sunset Country is a literal “snowmobiler’s paradise”. The region’s trails are
maintained by volunteer snowmobile
clubs of the OFSC – District 17 so there
are many kilometers of groomed trails
to ride on. Up here there’s almost
no traffic so the riding experience is
superior! The trails give riders a safe
and quality trail that you can ride in
comfort for hours.
Cross-Country Skiing
Once the water hardens into ice, the fishing really heats up
here in Ontario’s Sunset Country! This includes some of the
world’s best ice fishing opportunities for lake trout, walleye,
pike and crappie. During winter, the fish movements are
somewhat more predictable so finding a good hole is relatively easy to do. Once you are on top of the fish, the action can
be fast and furious and you’ll find no time to worry about the
cold since you be spending most of your time trying to catch
the fish that are biting at your hook.
Several of our outfitters as well as some independent ice fishing guides are available to help you find the best spots and
at the same time, offer the accommodations that you’ll need
after a day out on the ice.
Relax in a lodge or hotel hot tub, go to the restaurant and
dine on some great tasting food or go to the bar and enjoy a
few drinks with your friends. This great ice fishing trip awaits
you in Sunset Country at any time between January and the
end of March. Just so you know, the fish taste even better in
the fry pan when they come out of the ice cold water!

Several of the towns and cities in
Sunset Country offer groomed
ski trails for the novice or avid
cross-country skier. Make a weekend
trip of it and visit Red Lake, Kenora,
Fort Frances, Atikokan or Dryden or
any of the other small towns with
groomed trail systems and discover
just how great our skiing and our
hospitality is.
Downhill Skiing & Snowboarding
While Sunset Country isn't a downhill ski destination of choice, we do
have some exceptional hills that
will entertain you with hours of fun
over a weekend during the winter
months. Mount Evergreen Ski Hill in
Kenora is a good place for skiing,
snowboarding or sledding and there
are also great ski hills in Dryden and
Atikokan.
