This lecture also includes a lesson that will respond to the
California History Social Science Framework and
provide for the inclusion of Korea in World History in
the 10th grade and aligned to Common Core State
Standards). Some of the topics that will be covered: late
19th century imperialism, colonialism, Japanese
occupation and reading selections from documents and
books (Lost Names and When My Name was Keoko) to
understand the experience of Koreans during occupation
and its legacy in East Asia and the historical background
of Dokdo East Sea dispute.

Korean Traditional Music

The music of Korea will be compared with Western
music and the music of China and Japan. There will be
live traditional music performances that include the
Korean flute, the Gayagum and the Janggo drum. The
instructor will explain how to read the traditional musical
score of Korea.

Pansori and Korean Dance Performances

Won Il Kim : Pansori Singer
There will be an explanation of Pansori (Korea’s operatic
form) followed by a live performance. Won Il Kim will Sue Hee Ko : Janggo Gosu
teach participants Arirang, Korea’s most famous folk
song after Pansori. Ko’s Dance Institute will provide a
performance of famous Korean traditional dances: Chook
Won Moo and Buponoli.
Drumming Lesson and Visiting the Museum
The class will be divided into two groups for 30 minute
Korean drumming lesson. When one group is having the
lesson, the other group will visit the museum on the first
floor of the Korean Cultural Center.
