A lthough there seems to be conflicting advice from AMHA Facebook friends on what to do about these “feathers” on a newborn’s feet, at the very least you’ll know now this is common and most mini foals are born with them. Tana Fowler NEVER cut this off a newborn foal. It will dry up and fall off in a couple of days. If you CUT it, the foal will have very slippery feet and you are doing an injustice to the baby. Pat Foster I always cut this off right away. The foal stands and seems to walk better. I think this cushion is to protect the mother’s uterus. Once the baby is out I don’t think it serves a purpose. Beverly Brasington Wade We cut ours off too! Hay and shavings or a grassy pasture isn›t slippery! It made the foals much more coordinated as they always trip over them!
