2016 Land Conservation Successes
In 2016 , the Kiawah Conservancy
accepted four land donations :
••
112 Halona Lane . 112 Halona Lane ( 0.14 acres ) is located in the southcentral portion of Indigo Park . The property , which was donated to the Conservancy by the Smith family , adds to the existing preservation of maritime forest and shrub thicket habitats within Indigo Park , which are all within an “ Important Bobcat Area .” In the spring of 2013 , this site was used as a den by Bobcat 700 ( a GPS collared bobcat ).
••
134 Halona Lane . 134 Halona Lane ( 0.37 acres ) is located in the southeast corner of Indigo Park . The property was donated to the Conservancy by the Parsons family . The property adds to the existing preservation of maritime forest and shrub thicket habitats within Indigo Park and its associated “ Important Bobcat Area .”
••
74 Blue Heron Pond Road . This undeveloped home site was donated to the Conservancy by Colin Ruh and JoAnn Adrales Ruh in December of 2016 . At 1.26 acres , it is one of the larger Conservancy-owned lots on Kiawah Island . In addition to maritime forest , the property also contains substantial salt shrub thicket ( marsh edge ) habitat and is adjacent to a large swath of tidal wetlands .
••
269 Doral Open . This 0.36-acre undeveloped home site was donated to the Conservancy by the Krause family in December of 2016 . The property provides a forested area of habitat within an area of localized development , as most of Doral Open is built out . It is also contiguous with buffer habitat associated with Turtle Point Golf Course . The intact maritime forest on the property will provide resting and nesting space for birds and mammals into the future .
With the addition of these properties in 2016 , the Kiawah Conservancy now protects 35 properties totaling 348 acres on an around Kiawah Island .
