Artistic Director, Choreographer, Dancer
Sara is one of the most well-known representatives of flamenco in the world today. Her artistic
career began over 30 years ago and led her to
perform in theatres all around the world.
In 1998 she set up her own dance company,
Ballet Flamenco Sara Baras. To date, she has
put on 13 shows, all created and choreographed
by herself: Sensaciones (Sensations); Cádiz-La
Isla; Sueños (Dreams); Sueños de Sara (Sara’s
Dreams); Juana la Loca; Mariana Pineda; Sabores
(Flavours); Bara—Carreras; Carmen; Esencia
(Essence); La Pepa; Medusa, la guardiana and this
brand new show Voces.
More than 4,000 performances with her
company have taken her to the best theatres in
the world, making her one of the best-known
ambassadors of culture. She has performed
on stage at venues such as the Sydney Opera
House, the Royal Albert Hall, the Kremlin
Congress Palace in Moscow, El Teatro Real in
Madrid, the Grand Concert Hall Oktiabrskiy in
Saint Petersburg, Théâtre des Champs-Élysées
in Paris, El Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona,
the Bunkamura Theatre in Japan, the Great
Theatre in Shanghai, The Festival Hall in
Edinburgh, the Roman Theatre in Verona, the
Pathenon during the Athens Heracle’s Festival,
the Thailand Cultural Center, the Esplanade—
Theatres on the Bay in Singapore, Carnegie Hall
and City Center in New York, Walt Disney Concert
Hall in Los Angeles and many others.
She has acted in the films Flamenco Women
by Mike Figgis, Escuela de Seducción by Javier
Balaguer, Iberia and Flamenco Flamenco by Carlos
Saura and El sueño de Eleanor by Lluis Danes. She
presented the Spanish TV programme Algo más
que Flamenco. She was the face of advertising
campaigns for Freixenet, Triumph, Filodoro, El
orte Inglés, Magno, Cartier, Cruzcampo, Carbonell,
Image of Andaluc ia, Prevention of Forest Fires for
the Junta de Andalucía, Kinder and Madrid 2016.
She also gave her image to Mattel in aid of Aldeas
Infantiles for the new collection of Barbie dolls,
Dolls of the World—Barbie Spain.
Her artistic career and her contribution to the
internationalization of the Spanish culture have
been honoured with some of the most important
Spanish and international awards such as:
National Dance Award; Gold Medal to the Arts;
Medaille de Vermeil de la Ville de Paris; five MAX
Awards; Gold Metal of the Washington DC John
Fitgerald Kennedy Foundation for the Performing
Arts; Galileo Award given by the city of Florence;
the Creativity Award given by the Government
of Madrid and the Camilo José Cela Foundation;
the Women Together Award given by the Women
Together Foundation. She has been designed as
Ambassador of the Ibero-american Culture and
Hija Predilecta de Cádiz. She took part of the World
Philatelic Exhibition celebrated in Madrid. She
is also the only flamenco woman to have been
honoured with her own official stamp being part of
a limited edition created by the national post office.
