JAEWOO KIM, tenor
Born in Korea, Jaewoo Kim moved to Australia in
1990 to study at the Queensland Conservatorium
of Music. He completed his Bachelor of Music and
post-graduate diploma at the Canberra School of
Music, and was the winner of Opera Foundation’s
Metropolitan Opera Award and the McDonalds Aria
in 2000. Jaewoo was a member of Opera Australia’s
Young Artists Programme in 1998 and a principal
artist with the company from 2000 - 2006.
From 2007-2012 Jaewoo was based in the United
Kingdom where his roles included the Italian
Singer (Der Rosenkavalier) and Edgardo (Lucia di
Lammermoor) for English National Opera; Lensky
(Eugene Onegin) for English Touring Opera; Duke (Rigoletto) for Opera Holland
Park; Harlequin (The Heart of Darkness) at Linbury Theatre Covent Garden; Tamino
(The Magic Flute) for Lyric Opera Productions, Dublin; Alfredo (La traviata) for
Longborough Opera and Societa Filarmonia and Tamino, Ferrando (Così fan tutte)
and Orphée (Orphée aux enfers) for Diva Opera. His concerts included The Dream
of Gerontius with London Mozart Players and Oriana Choir at the Barbican.
Now living in Sydney, recent performances include Ottavio (Don Giovanni) for
NBR New Zealand Opera, Messiah with Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, Verdi
Requiem for Nottingham Harmonic Choir and Sydney Intervarsity Choral Festival,
a Gala Concert with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Count Almaviva in Opera
Queensland’s The Adventures of Figaro, and Christmas concerts for the Queensland
Performing Arts Centre. In 2016 Jaewoo will perform Mendelssohn’s Symphony no.
2 for Auckland Choral Society and return to Opera Queensland to perform Count
Almaviva in The Barber of Seville.
