In order to meet the growing need for open space in San Francisco , Rec and Park continues to acquire sites for new park spaces . With the help of the voter-approved Open Space Fund , we have added new city parkland over the past decade , including 900 Innes / India Basin Shoreline Park , Francisco Reservoir , 17th & Folsom and Noe Valley Town Square . Other future park sites in the pipeline include Schlage Lock and 11th & Natoma .
Located in a long-neglected corner of the city on a post-industrial site with few amenities nearby , the 900 Innes / India Basin project is particularly noteworthy , offering an opportunity for the City to address issues of environmental justice , equity and inclusion for the greater Bayview / Hunters Point communities .
Furthermore , as one of the city ’ s last remaining natural wetlands , it is a unique opportunity to design a 21st-century legacy park in a partly wild , post-industrial , historic waterfront context , with an emphasis on public access , recreation , resiliency and habitat enhancement .
In February , Rec and Park and The Trust for Public Land , in partnership with the San Francisco Parks Alliance , announced Gustafson Guthrie Nichol ( GGN ) as the winner of a design ideas competition to develop the concept design for shoreline park site . The competition , sponsored by a generous donation from Build Inc ., called for proposals to reimagine the two sites as part of a spectacular and seamless 1.5-mile-long network of public parks on the city ’ s southeast shoreline .
