CELEBRATION OF WORLD SOIL DAY,
5 NOVEMBER 2016
We celebrated World Soil Day to raise Prep students’
environmental awareness. The students had a chance
to practice with several activities about decomposition,
the nutrient cycle, sustainability, and to watch a
documentary named “Dirt! The movie”. They tried to
understand the human activities on soil since Industrial
revolution, the problems that have arisen in nature
and how environment has tolerated all these actions.
After they gathered all these perceptions, they offered
possible sustainable solutions to provide a better place
for future generations.
In one of the activity related to decomposition, some
students prepared compost by using green and brown
materials that they used the week before, some buried
a couple of tea bags in the BELS garden by labelling
the location of the tea bags to calculate the rate of
decomposition in Erzurum’s extreme conditions.
During World Soil Day activity, the students developed
and demonstrated their attributes of caring,
communication, thinking and open-minded, reflective,
inquirer personalities in the light of IGCSE & IB DP
learner profile.
