LET’S GO FLY A KITE As preps we began our study of solid geometry by building tetrahedral kites, in hopes of flying them for the Spring Sports Day in May. We began by making 10 tetrahedra for each kite, using drinking straws and tissue paper. Everything was tied together with ribbon, and we decorated them using colored pens and more curly ribbons. In the end, we were surprised to calculate that the volume of each kite should be 27 tetrahedra, since the side length went from 1 to 3, which means the area goes from 1 to 3 2 =9 and the volume goes from 1 to 3 2 =27. After a lot of thinking and examining our kites, we agreed that the volume was really tetrahedra! After they were built, we discussed side length, perimeter, face area and volume. As we added each layer to the kite, these measurements increased in interesting patterns.
