THE SNOW - SO MANY PROMISES TO KEEP... Adam was a man who had a farm and many animals – all really precious to him. However, his horse Simba was more special for our man than the other farm animals. One day, Adam decided to go to a village and spend some time with Simba. As they covered a certain distance, Adam started to think about his horse Simba. Simba was smaller compared to the other horses; perhaps this was what made him more special for his owner. Adam thought that the horse would wonder why they stopped in the middle of nowhere, where there was neither a farmhouse ın the nearby, nor a cue of hay. They stopped by a frozen lake which made them feel colder as if the snowy weather was not enough for them to chill. The woods were covered in a thick blanket of white and the only two sounds were the wind howling as it was dragging the snow in drifts, blunting the evening with ice-white dust in addition to Simba’s harness bells. Adam and Simba were having the darkest evening of the year. The trees became dim obstacles for them as they loomed into their vision. After a while, Adam and Simba kept going on farther and farther, losing track of their they footsteps on the white thick blanket of snow. The air was frozen lace on Adam’s skin, delicate and cold. The sky was washed with gray while finally the black clouds were born. The lake gave up its blue as it was offended by the harsh winter; keeping itself under the crystal ice, somehow trying to keep safe. The white snowflakes were beautifully falling in a haze of sparkling gray as glittering beneath the clouds. Yet, the white-snow color of the woods was the only shade of optimism they could get. And so, as optimistically as they could try to keep going on with their trip, both Adam and Simba have successfully survived through the harsh conditions of the heavy snow storm. It was indeed a terrible and miserable circumstance... Yet, Adam knew there still were so many places he could visit and discover and so many people he could meet and see. He had a long way to go on before returning to his home again. This thought made Adam persevere – as he had so many promises to keep and many miles to go before...the one-way sleep. Merve AKKUŞ 9-C ENGLISH DEPARTMENT WOODS - WINTER – WHERE TO...? (WHEN NOTHING GOES RIGHT – WHAT’S LEFT ...) It was midnight He was walking without knowing where to go. If the moon had not been in the sky, he could not have been sure of what he saw on his way to ...nowhere. Sweet-smelling rain-washed darkness was making his travel harder and harder by the help of the heavy fog which was like a giant eraser moving indiscriminately moving on its way to delete the trees from the gloomy forest. He remembered he used to be so afraid of sleeping in the dark when he was a kid. Yet, life had made him live in the shadows away from the so-called civilization. He remembered stories his mother used to tell him to calm him down. Then, he laughed. It was like centuries ago. The long path was too difficult to walk because of the massive sharp rocks. He saw a junction and stopped for a lethargic moment to decide which path he would follow. A wrong choice might be the end of all his journey. Left or Right...Then he remembered his life-time question: “When nothing goes Right – what else has been Left? What’s Left to all of us?“ Firstly, it seemed like a simple issue. However, it took him two minutes to understand the danger. Both paths might lead to the same inferno. Yet, he did not have enough time to spare - as he could not be awaiting for his destiny. “ I can not die tonight. “ he murmured. “I’ll get rid of all my past and move on for the brighter future...” Yet, a sudden whisper stopped his murmuring. It was a gruff voice that petrified him. He knew he had to run away but he was numb. He did the best thing he could do: he held his breath and did not make any noise whatsoever until he was sure he was safe. Then, he took a step towards the left and started follow the left path. After three or four minutes, he changed his mind and came back to the junction where he decided to try and follow the right path. He was praying he could find the entrance to the forest. It was not an ordinary entrance, nor an ordinary forest. It was the entrance to his new life. His past and all his sins could not find him anymore. His new life would be away from his regrets, dismissing all his mistakes. This path was giving the chance of absolute freedom. And so, he started walking on his way...far away from fears, sorrows or despair. Gül KİRAZ 9-C THE CLAPPER 2016 - 2017 25
