WVUSD: 2016 / 2017 Year-End Results
• Six of Diamond Bar High School’ s best mathematicians competed during Math Day at the Beach on March 18 at California State University, Long Beach. For the second year in a row, senior captain Benjamin Chen was named the overall champion. The team, for the second time, was able to come home medal winners with a 3 rd place finish.
• Three Walnut High School students brought home awards during the Los Angeles County Mock Trial competition. This year, over 2,000 students in the county participated in the academic competition. Mariah Quintero received the Outstanding Prosecution Witness award, and Leah Trinh and Brandon Lai received Honorable Mention awards for Outstanding Performance.
• Chess teams from Evergreen and Quail Summit Elementary Schools competed during the 52 nd Annual American Open Scholastic Tournament on November 26. Evergreen 1 st grader Brian Huan was named the 3 rd place winner, 1 st grader Glen Liu took 3 rd place, and 5 th grader Maxie Xie won 3 rd place. Quail Summit’ s 1 st, 2 nd, 4 th, and 5 th grade teams were Champions, with the 3 rd grade team taking the 2 nd place award.
• The Chaparral Middle School Wind Ensemble earned a Gold Rating in the national invitational Festival of Gold at the Segerstrom Center Auditorium on March 25 and 26. Additionally, over 20 students participated in the Festival Honor Band and Orchestra in the Encore Concert for Vietnam Veterans.
• Suzanne Middle School“ Roboheroes” Robotics Team took the 1 st place trophy in the Robot Game, on February 11, during the First Lego League Cup at Legoland in Carlsbad. Additionally, the“ Wolfcorps” Robotics Team was awarded 1 st place in Robot Game and the Champion Award.
• Walnut High School Sophomore Angela Cao took 1 st place in the 2017 Speech Trek contest. The 10 th annual Diamond Bar-Walnut branch competition was sponsored by the American Association of University Women on January 25. Angela Cao delivered a fiveminute impassioned speech about the pros of passing the Equal Rights Amendment( ERA).
• Diamond Bar High School Senior Ben Chen qualified to participate in the 46 th Annual USA Mathematical Olympiad( USAMO) on April 19 and 20 based on his performance in the American Mathematics Competitions( AMC) 12 exams and American Invitational Mathematics Examination( AIME) this year. The USAMO qualification puts Ben Chen among America’ s top math students. The USAMO is a prestigious event. Only 500 students from among thousands who participate in American Mathematics Competitions are invited.
• Chaparral Middle School students Megan Ho, Daniel Chou, and Joshua Chou competed at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory( JPL) Invention Challenge and were named 2016 winners for their“ Most Creative” entry. Team Chaparral took 1 st place at the Orange County regional competition and 8 th place overall out of 77 teams … with just two middle school teams participating.
