Those who went into business providing food, shelter and goods often achieved greater wealth than the miners. Today, there is a place in the local economy for everything from small family businesses to companies that ship products all over the world. Western Nevada County is fortunate to have a history of technology companies that dates back to 1959 with the formation of Grass Valley Group (GVG). The company continues today as Grass Valley, a Belden Brand, and is an important world supplier of video equipment primarily for the broadcast industry. Some of the area’s most successful companies were founded by former GVG employees. Manufacturing companies ship a variety of goods from the area such as electrical heating units, medical supply equipment, automated cutting systems, glass parts for industry and utility trailers. Grass Valley, a Belden Brand A recently completed project is the In-Town Campground near downtown Nevada City, and in Grass Valley, there are plans for a center with residential and commercial space. At the eastern end of the county, the Truckee economy is for the most part tourist based. There is not a great deal of manufacturing, although there is some light industry. The largest areas of employment include government, schools and the hospital, as well as businesses geared to the needs of tourists. In early 2014, the Truckee Town Council approved new economic development incentive programs to help foster a healthy year around economy. a business. The ERC goal is to grow the county’s economic pie. It hosts several workshops throughout the year, maintains a website with information relevant to the economic development of Nevada County, and provides assistance in clarifying government regulations to help remove barriers to success in the review and permitting process. The ERC serves as a central point of contact for employers requiring assistance in business endeavors. While the organization works on broad issues dealing with infrastructure, tax revenue generation and the workforce, its principal focus is on how to help individual businesses prosper.
