Rising star Julia Bullock opens the program with Villa-Lobos’ haunting and lyrical Brazilian twist on Bach, and the orchestra’s dear friend Jean-Yves Thibaudet dazzles with Gershwin’s jazzy, bluesy piano concerto. CARMINA BURANA FRI, SEP 30, 8 PM SAT, OCT 1, 8 PM JEAN-YVES THIBAUDET Marin Alsop, conductor Anna Christy, soprano Matthew Plenk, tenor Elliot Madore, baritone Baltimore Choral Arts Society Tom Hall, director Peabody Children’s Chorus Doreen Falby, director Stravinsky: Symphony in Three Movements Orff: Carmina Burana Soaring and gorgeous, earthy and bawdy, the epic Carmina Burana celebrates the ephemeral nature of life, the joys of spring, drinking, gambling, gluttony and lust – and also their cost. It’s paired with Stravinsky’s first major work written in the US, inspired by his response to World War II. Stormy and edgy, it captures just how in touch Stravinsky was with the mood of a world emerging from the trauma of war.
