2016-17 Season Brochures 2016-2017 Baltimore Symphony Orchestra Season | Page 2

Your 2016-2017 Programming a concert or concert season is like planning a great restaurant menu: when a meal pairs an adventurous course full of exotic and unexpected flavors with the comfort of a dish we know and love, we are able to explore the thrill of the unfamiliar and taste the familiar in a new context. The same holds true for how we experience music. As we enter our second century as an orchestra, we want to pay tribute to the incredible music that brought us to this place, while giving voice to the emerging artists and composers who are bringing invention and continued relevancy to the grand orchestral tradition. At the heart of our season is the great symphonist and humanist: Beethoven, whose music has the power to unite us and give us hope – a message as powerful today as it was in his time. Another focus is the music of 20th Century great, Igor Stravinsky, an artist who looked to the future while embracing the past. And, in keeping with the BSO’s longstanding commitment to the music of our time, we are thrilled to bring you the work of many great composers writing today, including five special centennial commissions that celebrate Baltimore. We begin our second century anticipating the joy of sharing great musical moments together and the optimism and hope that great art gives us as human beings. Thank you for your enthusiasm, loyalty and support. Our music comes to life only when you arrive! 2 3 4 5 7 9 11 13 15 17 19 20 WHY SUBSCRIBE? 21 23 25 HOLIDAY CONCERTS CLASSICAL SERIES CHARTS GALA AND SPECIAL EVENTS BEETHOVEN/STRAVINSKY CLASSICAL SEPTEMBER-NOVEMBER BEETHOVEN REDISCOVERED CLASSICAL JANUARY-FEBRUARY CLASSICAL MARCH-APRIL CLASSICAL MAY-JUNE SUPERPOPS SERIES OFF THE CUFF SERIES FAMILY CONCERTS (children 4 years & up) ORDERING SUPPORT YOUR BSO!
