Sat + Sun: 10:00am – 5:00pm
Mathias MacPhee, Chisel for a Palpable Dark
(Zhur Gallery, Front St.)
This installation, constructed from paper, bamboo, prisms and halogen
lights, makes reference to a Northwest Coast First Nations’ legend in
which the raven steals the world’s light from a cedar box. Macphee’s
treatment of the Zhur Gallery’s space encourages viewers to imagine
such a formative moment in animal-human existence.
Sat + Sun: 11:00am – 5:00pm
Douglas Drake, Nocturne Study
(Dawson City Music Festival office, 3rd & Harper St.)
This video installation uses the versatility of the geodesic dome as
an environment to screen found footage relating to night and its
cultural, social, and political activities, assembling these into an
erratic narrative. This study explores the absence of darkness in the
summer Yukon months, where nighttime is brief or nonexistent.
Sat: 9:00am – 7:00pm; Sun: 10:00am – 6:00pm
Meg Walker, Soundscaper
(Peabody’s Photo Parlour)
Swathes of postcards in any tourist town are available to remind us
about a vista, a historical location or a gorgeous wild animal we saw.
But what do we really see when we look at them later? Since we add
narratives to images almost instinctively when there is a soundscape
present (as the movie industry well knows), it’s intriguing to look at
a photo and take on the decision-making power of what audio should
go with it. Even with our own memories in hand, our response to
an image shifts when we change what we hear. Soundscaper offers
viewers a handful of soundscapes to play when they are looking
at a selection of images a Yukon tourist might encounter. The
playful act of switching between sounds and images will reveal how
the narratives can also be swapped, or generated, in unique and
personalized ways.
