Sioux Lookout The Municipality of Sioux Lookout covers a land area of about 380 sq. km and has a population of roughly 5,300. The town's history begins with the construction of the Grand Trunk Railway (now CNR) in the early 1900's. During the Gold Rush, the airway at nearby Hudson was claimed to be the second busiest airway in North America! The area history however reaches much further back as the town is located on traditional lands of the Ojibway First Nations. Artifacts have been discovered that date back 5000-7000 years. There is much to see and do in Sioux Lookout! Organized sports include curling and golf, with local course rules covering golf balls lost to foxes or ravens! Easy access to the English River system provides opportunities for boating, fishing, canoeing and camping. During the winter an extensive ski trail system is groomed and snowmobile trails link us to neighbouring communities. The Municipality's Cedar Bay complex is an ideal location for outdoor education and family reunions or overnight getaways. There are over 100 things to do during the annual Blueberry Festival starting the last week in July and lasting for 10 fun filled days. Don't miss the grand fireworks display on Canada Day - July 1st. Local hotels offer amenities such as waterslides, exercise rooms and saunas. The Sioux Lookout museum is a “must see” and local history books are available at the Travel Information Centre. If nature and the outdoors are of interest to you, come witness walleye spawning in the springtime at the Bindo Creek platform. Take a drive out to Hudson and see the town's floating lodges, numerous lakes and enjoy time on the sandy beaches. Anglers will want to enter their catch in the Sioux Lookout District Master Angler Release Awards Program. Catch a fish and reap the rewards. You might even catch a trophy sized fish like the Muskie caught July of 2005 on Lac Seul. This fish set a world record as the “Largest Muskie ever caught by a woman anywhere in the world”, measuring a whopping 57 inches. Take a boat tour or walk along the beautiful Umfreville Trail. You can even explore Sioux Lookout from the skies with an air tour. Nature enthusiasts will find hours of pleasure in Ojibway Provincial Park. Athletes can engage in many activities including beach volleyball, tennis, baseball, soccer and even bocce. The more adventurous can try rock climbing, horseback riding, roller blading, biking or jogging along the Umfreville or Cedar Bay Recreation Area.
